Houston, We Have Attachment
Its the big topic in adoption, especially older child adoption, that of Attachment. Its a fancy way of describing the process of you falling in love with your kids, and them reciprocating that love to you.
This weekend, I went on a women’s retreat to Tahoe – two days away from the kids. For the first time since they arrived. I had two fears – one, that they might miss me too much, and the other, that they might not miss me at all.
I’m happy to report that we struck just the right balance. M especially missed me, crying at one point – the positive being that she went to her dad for comfort. And I came home to love notes saying she “mist me”, and some of the biggest hugs and smiles I’ve ever seen.
Oh yea, we’re attached!

Another Reason for Adopting a Dog
The other day, M was having one of her meltdowns. Prompted by nothing we could identify, we found her in her room, hiding under her comforter, inconsolable.
She’s never been able to get herself out of one of these. She ends up just exhausting herself, and getting through it that way.
This time though, I decided to bring in the heavy hitter – Cosmo, our dog of a few months. And he was in full crazy mode – jumping, nipping, running – being about as cute as possible.
M tried her hardest to fight the smile. She’d smile for a second, then go back to frowning, Then again. Then finally, she gave herself over to the crazy puppy love.
Cosmo’s my hero.
